Dear Collingswood and Oaklyn Families,

In light of recent reports regarding increased immigration enforcement activity in our region, we are writing to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the safety, well-being, and education of every student in Collingswood and Oaklyn.

Our schools are, and will remain, safe havens for learning. We understand that news of local enforcement actions can create deep anxiety for our students and their families. Please know that our primary mission is to ensure that every child who walks through our doors feels secure, valued and ready to learn.

It's important to note that we strictly adhere to federal law and New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) guidelines to protect student rights:

Every child has a constitutional right to a free public education regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents.

We do not collect, maintain, or share information regarding the immigration status of our students or their families. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), student records are confidential and will not be released to federal authorities without a valid judicial warrant or subpoena.

Immigration agents are not permitted on school grounds or in school buildings without a signed judicial warrant. Any such request is immediately escalated to the Superintendent’s office and reviewed by legal counsel.

We recognize the emotional toll that these uncertainties take on children. Our school counselors and mental health professionals are trained and available to provide a safe space for students to process their fears and stress. We encourage any family experiencing hardship or anxiety to reach out to their school principal or counselor for support.

If you or someone you know is in need of immediate assistance, the following resources are available:

COSECHA/DIRE Hotline: 1-888-347-3767 (24/7 support for immigration emergencies)

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey: aclu-nj.org

Visit ImmSchools online at https://www.immschools.org/resources: Multilingual resources for undocumented families in K-12.

Collingswood and Oaklyn's greatest strengths are in their diversity and the way we care for one another. We will continue to stand with our families to ensure that our schools remain a place where all children can thrive without fear.

Sincerely,

Dr. Fred McDowell, Superintendent
